WHO ARE THE HURRICANES?

The Hurricanes Athletic Club of Boston is a provider of uncompromising sports programs to young adults with ties to Boston's Chinatown community. Basketball and volleyball are the Hurricanes' anchoring venues to which participating members develop athletic skills while social, educational, and professional interaction are developed.

The Hurricanes Athletic Club has an active membership in excess of 90 with an ever-expanding alumni of over 150. Open membership of the Hurricanes allows the club to maintain an ease of access to its programs. More importantly, the club is structured to dynamically create and maintain athletic programs to fit the needs of membership. Examples of membership interests have fostered golf, softball, tennis, and roller hockey programs. Alumni growth enriches the club's membership of young adults with access to develop relationships in career guidance and social awareness.

The club originated as the Wing Wor Club, when a club of athletic youths were sponsored by Boston's Chinatown Merchants to participate in various national volleyball and basketball tournaments. The Wing Wor Club developed quickly in the 70's to field highly competitive teams. Top finishes in both volleyball and basketball tournaments translated to a club reputation for athletic excellence.

The 1980's proved to be a period of club expansion, as membership reached over 75 active members participating in various athletic events. Club growth encouraged a management restructuring and a new approach to fundraising. Club achievements continued as the "A" volleyball team finished third and fourth in the North American Chinese Invitational Tournament in 1989 and 1990, respectively.

The club changed its name to the Hurricanes Athletic Club in 1992 to reflect a new emphasis for the organization. Aimed at servicing youths with Pacific Asian heritage beyond the Boston Chinatown area, the Hurricanes broadened its awareness and focus on the metro Boston area. The 90's have proven to be a period of social and cultural growth for its membership.

As we dawn on the new millennium, the Hurricanes Athletic Club looks forward to continuing to provide superior athletic programming to it's membership and the community it serves.
